Lyon is a city in southeastern France and is the capital of the region of Ron-Alp. This is the third largest city in France after Paris and Marseilles. The city of Lyon is built on the confluence of the rivers Rhone and Shaun and holds a special geographical position, with significant geostrategic importance. Considered one of the most important Metropolitan centers of Europe and an important industrial centre for France, especially in the sectors of chemical and pharmaceutical. On the West side of the city, dominated by the notorious Hill of Foyrbier, "the hill that prays", the existence of the Basilica Notre Dame and the Hill of Croix-Rous, known as "the hill that works", thanks to its traditional crafts with silk fabrics. Lyons has history with remarkable sights, while the medieval part of town located at the foot of two hills, with appeal small passages, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the East the two hills and just before the confluence of two rivers, is the center of the city, which looks like a peninsula. The city has stone streets, medieval houses, imposing churches, has its unique Renaissance architecture and loves the arts.
Basilica of our Lady of Foybier: The Church created between 1872-1896 with a combination of Romance and Byzantine architecture, with famous eight sites towers and a belfry that houses the gilt statue of the Virgin Mary. The Basilica features impressive stained glass, while the Interior decorate amazing mosaics.
Lyon Cathedral: The Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of the city and is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The Roman Catholic Church created in the ruins of a church which stood there from as early as the 6th century. It is worth visiting the temple and see up-close the importance astronomical clock that features and dates from the 14th century. Great interest yet and presents the amazing musical instrument that is in place with excellent acoustics and the multitude of possibilities.
Parc de la Tete d'Or Park is The oldest of the city and is an amazing OASIS, full of botanical gardens, lakes, quiet paths and a free Zoo. You can enjoy a unique walk on paved paths, in a fantastic landscape of calm and relaxation.
Musée des Confluences: The Museum has an amazing futuristic design of steel and glass and deals with the eternal questions about the future of man, of nature, and for that we are on the planet.
International Miniature Museum: The Museum was founded in 1990, comprises 7 floors and is maintained by Miniatoyrista Dan Ollman. Includes collections, from original elements and decorations from various films, revealing the mysteries and special effects. Still has faithfully copies from various miniature landscapes and buildings from all time seasons.
Centre d ' Historie de la Resistance et de la Deportation: Museum exhibits and recounts the daily life of the inhabitants of Lyon to the German occupation and the ways in which they managed to resist the Gestapo.
Lyon has an excellent public transport system, although the best way to move through the city is by walking and cycling. Taxis are particularly expensive and will hardly be able to move around by car, because the city lacks in terms of parking and all the private spaces are extremely expensive.
In the city there are several good hotels at very good prices, capable to serve you, so that you have a pleasant stay. Just outside the city you will find a large and very affordable Hostel.
The unique entertainment centre of the city is divided into neighborhoods, where passing through the alleys, you will see architectural styles and monuments, which cover a wide chronological period. The Place Bellecour square, the largest square, which hosts the statue of Louis XIV and just beyond the colorful Carousel. In the District of Vieux Lyon and Rue St Jean, will find more bar and clubs of the city, with gusto until morning. The area is the oldest part of the city and is filled with buildings of unique architecture and many quaint little café. In the area of the Place des Terreaux, there are more music sounds with Jazz bars.
Lyon has many excellent restaurants, where most are awarded with Michelin stars. Of particular interest are the authentic traditional tavernas, bouchons Bistro-. Traditionally separate dishes which you should try in the city, is the tart from chicken liver gateau de volaille, sausage with apples boudin noir and the coq au vin cock au Vin. Accompany your meals with local wines and excellent in the end enjoy candied chestnuts and coussin de Lyon, which is a combination of chocolate with toffee.
The largest shopping center of the city is La Part Dieu, with a multitude of shops, ready to satisfy your every need. In Lyon you should definitely visit the Grand Central market, Halles de Lyon, where you will find especially local traditional products, such as cured meats, cheeses, seafood and much more. Leaving the city, don't miss to visit the little Antic Wine Shop, with wines from all over the world and a distinctive collection of some locals.
